These reports examine the degree to which groups of children have contact with the child welfare system at higher or lower rates than their presence in the general population.
Important note: As of Quarter 2, 2011 Disparity Indices for 1998-2011 will be calculated using updated population data from the California Department of Finance. Because population data are derived from 3 different sources, analysis of trends is not recommended. Please consult the population data index methodology for important details. http://cssr.berkeley.edu/cwscmsreports/methodologies/default.aspx?report=Population
Please note that the tables posted in previous quarters were unduplicated at the state level. Therefore, some counties experienced a slight undercount, since a child can have events in more than one county in a year, yet only one was selected. The current tables unduplicate separately at both the county and state level. We use a similar method in our "Rates" Section.
Please also note that there are slight discrepancies for a few time periods between frequencies in this report and those in allegation, substantiation, entries, and in-care reports found elsewhere on this site. We are currently investigating the source of these differences.
