METHODOLOGY for Placement Change Reason Reports

Findings in this report are the result of analyses of data from the California Children's Services Archive. This section examines the reported reason for each placement change during the year for children in child welfare supervised foster care. Thus, data on a given child would appear more than once, if the child moved more than once, or not at all, if the child did not move.

The county shown is the assigned county at the time of the child’s initial removal.

These moves are divided into two groups. The first group includes situations where a child moved from one placement to another placement. The second group includes situations where the child left one placement but did not move to another placement during the same placement episode.

Both groups frequently include "other" as the placement change reason. The reasons for the frequent use of "other" as a placement change reason is not clear.
